Narrative
After escaping from an island prison where he spent 14 years after being wrongly accused of treason, Edmond Dantès returns as the Count of Monte Cristo to take revenge on the people who betrayed him. When Albert watches Hydee sing and play the guitar, it’s very obvious that he’s not even touching the strings half the time.

So I actually read the book, the real book(s), not the watered-down version you can find in a bookstore. The story is compelling, character-driven, intricate, and the details tell how it all plays out.
This film, while perfectly okay, has none of that except for the outline of the main plot
There’s no good without the bad, no ambivalent ending, and no basis for anything, the relationship between the Abbe and Edmond who actually becomes a son. There’s also a lack of backstory from the escape to Edmonds’ arrival in Paris that makes the whole revenge plot at all believable.
I also miss old Mr
Villefort whose story, while peripheral, is so central to who Edmond really is as a person. So, you want to see a French drama set during the 19th century that’s pretty okay with good actors, go ahead.
