Benjy Kaplan: Guys, this is fucking cinema
Narrative
Misfit cousins David and Benjy reunite as they travel through Poland to honor their beloved grandmother. The adventure takes a different turn when old tensions between the odd couple surface against the background of their family history. When Benjy and David visit their grandmother’s house in Poland, the setting is where Jesse Eisenberg’s real ancestors settled in the diaspora. But Culkin is just annoying
(Seen at an advance screening in Bristol as part of the London Film Festival) I had high hopes for Real Pain, but despite some funny moments and emotional speeches, there are too many areas where the film falls short. The biggest positive is Jesse Eisenberg himself. The writer/director anchors the film as awkward but successful New Yorker David, who invites his cousin Benji (Kieran Culkin) on a trip to Poland to honor his grandmother and reflect on his personal struggles. Eisenberg is believable and likable and is at the center of some of the best scenes.
The role would have been much stronger if played straight
He’s an energetic performer without a doubt, but his fickleness and inability to read situations means he’s the kind of guy you’d want to run away from minutes after meeting him. It is hard to believe that he is becoming the main attraction of the trip. Will Sharp is also very weak as a tour guide, adopting a feminine Yorkshire accent for comedic effect – perhaps American ears won’t be so irritated by this, but British ears were sorely disappointed. The rest of the cast have small roles, but Jennifer Gray (yes, THAT Jennifer Gray) and Kurt Egiavan stand out, adding authenticity to their characters.
Situations develop or are assumed to develop without apparent reason or authorization
Apart from the variable performances, there is a general feeling that the scenes were improvised and developed as they went along. For a drama to be successful – and it is essentially a drama – the script and story development must be tight, something that “A Real Pain” lacks. Any momentum that builds up is easily lost – I looked at my watch after half an hour and the movie feels long even though it’s less than 90 minutes. Oh, and there are moments where it feels like a promotion for the Polish tourist board – don’t get me wrong, it made me want to visit, I just don’t think it’s the role of a feature film.
A missed opportunity
“A Real Pain” suggests there’s something important to say about grief, but it never quite finds the right words. See the full lineup for the 62nd New York Film Festival this fall.
