Narrative

Two criminal twin brothers, one of whom is trying to reform, embark on a dangerous heist. Facing legal troubles, gunfights, and family drama, they must reconcile their differences before their mission leads to self-destruction.

Emmet Walsh (Judge Farful)

(March 22, 1935 – March 19, 2024). A killer cast of Peter Dinklage, Josh Brolin, Glenn Close, Brendan Fraser, simply isn’t enough to elevate Brothers above the average comedy.

Unlike Max Barbakov’s previous film Palm Springs, which offered an intriguingly romantic take on a time loop with fascinating characters, this film relies purely on the uneasy equation between the brothers and their mother. But the film doesn’t take many risks in its storytelling, sticking to the basics of what constitutes a dysfunctional family, providing a few one-liners and slapstick humor (courtesy of Fraser’s dirty cop), ultimately treading familiar paths even as the heist elements take over.

It’s certainly a step up from Palm Springs, but I still have faith in Barbakow as a filmmaker when it comes to handling comedy

P.S. I never thought I’d say this about Marisa Tomei, but the film could have done without scenes with her… or that ape… The final season of “What We Do in the Shadows” is one of the biggest TV and streaming releases of the month.
